Maths fun with Hook a Duck!

Miss Wright has joined the Nursery Team this week and will be leading red group.

I have loved getting to know the children and I am really excited to continue being a part of their learning journey this term. Please come and say hello and introduce yourself if you see me!

This week, we have loved playing with the hook a duck in our water area. We have counted the number of ducks in the water tray and identified the numbers on the bottom of the ducks. Not only was this lots of fun, but we have continued to improve our counting skills.

Coronation picnic

We joined Reception and KS1 in the hall for our Coronation Picnic on Friday, we loved listening to the songs and waving our flags while we ate our picnic lunch. We loved using our fingers to make flags and shared them with the rest of the school. We also had our very own Coronation Picnic in Nursery for snack time. What a great day!

The chicks have arrived!

What an eggciting week we have had in Nursery. The children were so happy when our eggs arrived in the incubator and waited patiently for them to hatch. On Wednesday the wait was over and 6 chicks were hatched. The children have been eggcellent and very calm and gentle as they have watched the chicks and held them. They talked about the variety of colours and the noises they made. We have been looking at books about the lifecycle of a chicken and using key words such as ‘hatch’, ‘crack’ and ‘feathers’ to describe what we have observed over the week. Next week we will be naming our chicks and this weekend you and your children can have a think.

The children have also been doing some fantastic observational drawings of the chicks and one child even read them a story.

The Farm

This week in Nursery we have been talking about farm animals. We watched a video about life on the farm and the children talked about the different type of farm animals, the baby names and the noises they make.

The children then created a poster about what animals they saw in the video and we discussed what they looked like. We had some fantastic drawings e.g. of sheep, cows, horses and pigs.

Each group had lots of fun getting messy and creating a hobby horse. They used glue and paper to make Paper Mache and stuck it to the balloon. We talked about the process and look forward to painting them. It was lots of fun getting very sticky.

Science Week

This week the children in Nursery have been super scientists! They have been investigating lots of different things.

The children used puff pastry to make cheese straws. They noticed that it had lines down the side for layers. The children made predictions about what would happen when it was cooked. The children noticed that the pastry had risen in the oven, it was amazing!

The children became detectives. They were given pots with different scents and the children had to guess what the smell was. The children loved the smell of lavender, lemon and hot chocolate but weren’t so keen about coffee or vinegar!

The children were given the challenge of picking up a block of ice using a piece of string and salt. The children found this very tricky! They explored putting salt on the ice then placing the string on top – but that didn’t work! The children then thought to put the string on the ice before adding a lot of salt. The children were amazed when they could lift the ice up! It was just like magic!

World Book Day

This week the children in Nursery have celebrated World Book Day by dressing up in some of their favourite costumes inspired by Narnia.

The children chose their favourite books to show the grown ups!

The children loved talking about what part of the story they enjoyed the most.

Transport!

This week the children have been thinking about different types of transport, how they move and if they have ever used them before.

No-one has ever been on a submarine, but lots of children have been in a car or on a bus!

Zach told everybody about the time he went to town on the bus, it was very exciting but a bit noisy!

Paige has been on an aeroplane before when she went on her holiday.

The children looked at photos of different types of transport and then used the mobilo to make models!

The children also practised developing their cutting skills by cutting around different vehicles.

Lunar New Year

This week we have been learning all about Lunar New Year.

The children have enjoyed the challenge of using chopsticks to pick up the “noodles”. It was really tricky but they all persevered!

The children have been practising how to write numbers in Chinese! They had to find the character that matched their age – look how amazing they are!

The children also created wonderful silhouette artwork of a rabbit. They carefully used sponges to dab paint onto a template of a rabbit. They then removed it to see a rabbit outline.

Winter Wonderland

The children in Nursery have been reading ‘Winter Wonderland’ this week. It was a bit different to the books we normally read as it told us lots of facts! We learned that this is called a non-fiction book.

The children discussed what they could do in Winter, lots of them have enjoyed making snowmen before!

The children folded a piece of paper in half and then carefully snipped shapes using scissors to make snowflakes. They persevered even though it was so tricky!

Forest School

We took the children outside and listened to the birds cheeping. The children couldn’t see any berries for the birds to eat and became very concerned! We talked about making a bird feeder using cereal, and either string or pipe cleaners.

The children found threading the cereal onto the string really tricky as it kept unravelling but they were determined to help the birds!

The children enjoyed hanging the feeders on the trees in the Forest. We hope the birds enjoy their food!

Christmas Party

The children in Nursery have been learning all about how Christians celebrate Christmas.

They have learned the Nativity story, practised wrapping presents, made Christmas cards and sung Christmas songs. The children knew that people have Christmas parties too!

On Wednesday the children wore their party clothes and made special party hats. They sat together and had special party food.

The children then played party games including musical chairs and sleeping lions. Mrs Richardson was very cheeky at the end of sleeping lions. She made such a loud noise with a pan to wake the lions up!

The children and staff all hope that you have a restful holiday and get to spend some time with your favourite people. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Christmas Show

This week we performed our Christmas Story and songs for our grown ups.

We dressed up in our best Nativity costumes, took some photos and then waited quietly.

We were a little bit nervous when all of the grown ups came in; there were so many that some of them had to stand up!

We all joined in re-telling the Nativity Story. Our favourite part is when the innkeepers won’t let Mary and Joseph stay with them.

We used our best singing voices for the songs. We love singing Jingle Bells!

We were so glad that our grown ups came to watch our show. We had put lots of effort into learning it all. One Mummy even said she was so proud she was going to cry!

Well done Nursery!
